The municipality of
Fushë Kosovë/Kosovo Polje, with its main
town and 18 villages, is located approximately eight
kilometres southwest of Kosovo’s capital city, Prishtinë/Priština.
This good geographical position is considered as
the main advantage for its inhabitants: the municipality
is located on the main route from Prishtinë/Priština
to Peja/Peć, and serves as an excellent transit
stop for through traffic, providing a ready and
valuable source of income for residents here. The
town is generally accessible and transport connections
to the capital are comparatively good.
The latest statistics
suggest that Kosovo Albanians constitute 85% of
the total municipal population, whilst the Kosovo
Serb population has dropped to only 8% overall.
There is also an Ashkali community settled in the
main town, as well as some Roma, spread out in several
different villages.
The main religions
followed in the municipality are Muslim and Orthodox
Christianity. There are three Orthodox churches
and eleven mosques in the municipality.
The Cultural
House, next to the library, the cinema and the Community
Centre, also hosts a Youth Centre run by a local
youth NGO as well as a local multiethnic radio station
that broadcasts in both Albanian and Serbian languages,
having also programmes for the Ashkali and Roma
communities based here. |
