Democratic Development

Background

Origin, vision and statute

The Network for Democratic Development (NDD) is the first multiethnic network of its kind to exist in Kosovo. It was created in July 2003 by its 13 founding members, and is made up of representatives from 7 Community Centres (CCs), 5 NGO Resource Centres (NRCs) and 1 Democratization Point (DP). All these centres were originally established by the OSCE as part of its overall programme to promote the creation of an active and democratic civil society in Kosovo.

Since each centre had similar aims and objectives, some centre managers agreed that it would be mutually beneficial to join together in a network. In this way, the NDD Centres would be able jointly to promote common activities and projects, and therefore more easily attract donors' and local institutions' support.

Gathered together in Brezovica/Brezovicë in July 2003, all centre representatives readily agreed to form the NDD. At the same meeting, the association's President, Deputy President and 3 other Executive Board Members were elected.

The NDD Statute and constitutive assembly were prepared with the support of the OSCE through the "Web Multiethnic Network Project" implemented by the NRC Prizren and funded by the Dutch Government Small Investment Minority Fund (SIMF).

The NDD aims to promote the democratic development of civil society working with all communities and showing that equality and co-operation can become a part of everyday life in Kosovo too.

The NDD is fully registered with the United Nations Interim Administration in Kosovo as a non-for-profit NGO (UNMIK Reg. No. 5102263-7).
